11/26/06 – The “Freedom Tower” is an insult to all Americans. The process that imposed it on us was devoid of honor or good sense. If built, it would symbolize the subversion of freedom, because it is the result of rank dishonesty on the part of our officials and those who report on them. If we let them get away with muting our voices, it will be the Freedumb Tower and will represent the triumph of those who feel free to tune us out while talking over us and down to us.

George Pataki chose to honor the wishes of a minority who never liked the Twin Towers over the majority who loved them and wanted them rebuilt. And then he chose to stage-manage a bogus process designed to give people the impression that their opinion mattered, when it certainly did not.

Now he is set to make a great show of raising the first steel columns and the media is going to help make it seem inevitable and inspiring – but it will be neither.

HOW COULD SOMETHING THAT IS THE RESULT OF DECEPTION AND DISRESPECT EVER HONOR THE FALLEN OR ENNOBLE THE LIVING?

He has shown how little he respects the people he was elected to serve and we will do our best to see that he is never elected to anything again. Now we will see who shares his disdain for the democratic process.

The Twin Towers Alliance will begin a mailing this week to those in the government and media who have stood by while George Pataki and his appointees have abused the public’s trust. They won’t have to take our word for it – they will have the statement of the Governor-elect of New York calling it an “Enron-style debacle.”

We are not going to let those who kept quiet while this flagrant misconduct took place stay in the background. We are creating a new page that will track the surveys that go out and the answers or non-answers we get back. Posting of the results will begin in January.

We believe that the situation is not nearly as bad as it looks. Those in charge have tremendous resources at their disposal to manage the flow of information and create a self-fulfilling prophecy. But we don’t buy it and do not think they will be able to con the public in the end. In addition to other initiatives already in the pipeline, a British documentary is underway and promises to really shake things up. Clips will start appearing online right after the holidays and will build until its release.

A supporter wrote to remind us that “. . . people have succeeded against longer odds than these. Please keep it up.”
