When Alex Slingsby of East Yorkshire, England, called last Sunday, answering his questions about the Twin Towers helped me to see them in a more intimate light than ever before. I recalled that when I worked in the Empire State Building, I was awed by its mystique, but the best part of being there came at sunset when I looked south from the 68th floor and watched the most amazing light show — day after day — as the sun bounced off the Twin Towers.

A year later, when I worked in Tower Two, I felt such exhilaration every morning as I traveled downtown that one would think I was going to meet my lover, instead of heading to the office. And that is not hindsight. I was aware then, as were so many of the people who walked through those doors every day, that the Towers were buildings unlike any others. They were so much more than buildings. They enfolded you, they embraced you, they inspired you — and when you were inside of them it was never just another day.

One of the most encouraging aspects of being engaged in the battle to reclaim the Towers’ place in the skyline is how often we are contacted by young people, from their early to late teens, who really, really get it. They know why this matters and they care so much. This is the first time that we have posted on the Home page something that was sent in to us — because all of the tributes are important. Nevertheless, this one belongs at the very top of the page and will remain there until our common goal is achieved. It is a magical four minutes.

Please go to Alex’s YouTube tribute to vote and comment there. The great Twin Towers, as he called them, were just sensational — and could be again. Thank you, Alex for capturing the essence of what made them so phenomenal with your marvelous footage and music.

I realize now, as I never did before, why so many of us want them back: Whether we worked there, visited them once, or simply saw them on a screen, we know it would be a desecration to raise anything but even better versions of the originals in their place… because they are still in us and we are still in them.    — Margaret Donovan | The Twin Towers Alliance
