Send us a short video on why we must rebuild the Twin Towers to video@coalitionforabetterworld.org. Now is the time to speak out!
A new social network is in the works to rescue the Twin Towers… What is happening at the World Trade Center is insane and, if we let it happen, then what does that make us? There has been a lot of talk lately about how the electorate has been “politically abused” and that most of us have lost the will to fight back. Fighting City Hall takes time, energy, and resolve. So, when people become convinced that there is no use, they give up. But there is good reason to think we can overcome the non-sense at the World Trade Center and we are giving citizens the means to be part of the solution instead of part of the problem.
Don’t be passive, because the dynamics of the situation are very promising. When the Port Authority boasts that 95% of the steel is completed for the memorial, or the core of the Freedom Tower has reached five whole stories, just think of the old Yankee Stadium — that should put things in perspective. They are confusing activity with progress. Anything can be torn down to make way for something better — and it would be hard to imagine anything less appropriate or uplifting than the mess at Ground Hero.
So, here is your chance to make your statement. Follow the link below to our Facebook page, click on the video icon, and either upload a video or record one directly using a webcam. Start off by identifying yourself, who you are, where you are from, and say whatever it is about the World Trade Center that you want the President and Congress to hear. If you want to participate but don’t want to do it through Facebook, send us an email and we will provide ftp access to our server.
We are preparing a package for Congress and the President and will select the strongest statements. It will coincide with the Senate Finance Committee’s consideration of our request to make reauthorization of the Liberty Zone Program subject to a cost/benefit analysis of the official plan. It is hard to imagine, with all of the reasons to doubt the soundness of the project, that Senators will fail to understand that the taxpayers are entitled to an independent evaluation of the plan before another public dime is pledged.
According to a 1/5/10 report in The New York Observer, if the arbitration decision that is expected soon doesn’t go Silverstein’s way, he plans a second arbitration to force the issue:
“Absent a settlement, the Silverstein net lessees plan to commence a second arbitration in which they will show that the Master Development Agreement was the product of the Port Authority’s negligent misrepresentation and/or fraud,” a bond document filed in the fall and examined by The Observer says, “in which they will seek an award of monetary damages, including rescission damages totaling at least $2.75 billion, which will be dedicated to the project.”
In other words, if he doesn’t win the right to pick the public’s pocket, this man who signed a contract in July of 2001 agreeing to rebuild the Twin Towers if they were ever destroyed, plans to make the public, through the Port Authority’s coffers, pay for “his” buildings — and he thinks there is nothing we can do to stop him. He could be right. He could be wrong.
The Worldwide Coalition to Rebuild the Twin Towers
Two thousand names were suggested for the fabulous restaurant at the top of the world. The winner was based on the Burt Bachrach/Hal David song The Windows of the World. Click on the image above to hear the beautiful Dionne Warwick version of the song. What is incredibly moving is looking back on how perfectly the words captured the Towers’ twin muses. They were, at the same time, glorious temples to the worldly can-do spirit and, from the very beginning, soaring shrines dedicated to a better world. In the shadow of 9/11, the song is particular poignant and wistful. But when the Towers are shining again, we will be well on our way to making our world better — much better.
